Construction is well underway on the streetscape and stormwater renewal of the historic boulevard at George Street in Thebarton.
This busy thoroughfare, connecting South Road and Port Road, was in a dilapidated condition, with an old stormwater main drain barely below the road surface. A full road geometric re-design was undertaken to provide greater kerb setbacks to the plane trees lining the roadway, which will provide indented parking bays and bus bays, and provide improved street drainage performance. The main drain within George Street that services the suburb was also upgraded.
The construction phase is being carefully staged to mitigate impacts on local residents and businesses with the works currently focussed on the northern carriageway to maintain one-way traffic flow before switching over to the other side. New street trees will be planted to offset those that were removed, bringing new life to this old street!
